Bertrand Russel's Testimony

Bertrand Russel's Testimony

"Our use of phrase 'The Dark ages' to cover the period from 699 to 1,000 marks our undue concentration on Western Europe..."

"From India to Spain, the brilliant civilization of Islam flourished. What was lost to christendom at this time was not lost to civilization, but quite the contrary..."

"To us it seems that West-European civilization is civilization, but this is a narrow view."

  • Who is Bertrand Russel ?

  • Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy states that:

Bertrand Arthur William Russell (b.1872 - d.1970), British philosopher, logician, essayist, and social critic, best known for his work in mathematical logic and analytic philosophy. His most influential contributions include his defense of logicism (the view that mathematics is in some important sense reducible to logic), and his theories of definite descriptions and logical atomism. Along with G.E. Moore, Russell is generally recognized as one of the founders of analytic philosophy. Along with Kurt Gödel, he is also often credited with being one of the two most important logicians of the twentieth century.

Over the course of his long career, Russell made significant contributions, not just to logic and philosophy, but to a broad range of other subjects (including education, politics, history, religion and science), and many of his writings on a wide variety of topics have influenced generations of general readers. After a life marked by controversy (including dismissals from both Trinity College, Cambridge, and City College, New York), Russell was awarded the Order of Merit in 1949 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. Also noted for his many spirited anti-war and anti-nuclear protests, Russell remained a prominent public figure until his death at the age of 97.

    Alphonse de LaMartaine's Testimony

    Alphonse de LaMartaine's Testimony

" Never has a man undertaken a work so far beyond human power with so feeble means, for he (Muhammad) had in the conception as well as in the execution of such a great design, no other instrument than himself and no other aid except a handful of men living in a corner of the desert. Finally, never has a man accomplished such a huge and lasting revolution in the world, because in less than two centuries after its appearance, Islam, in faith and in arms, reigned over the whole of Arabia, and conquered, in God's name, Persia Khorasan, Transoxania, Western India, Syria, Egypt, Abyssinia, all the known continent of Northern Africa, numerous islands of the Mediterranean Sea, Spain, and part of Gaul."

"If greatness of purpose, smallness of means, and astonishing results are the three criteria of a human genius, who could dare compare any great man in history with Muhammad? The most famous men created arms, laws, and empires only. They founded, if anything at all, no more than material powers which often crumbled away before their eyes. This man moved not only armies, legislations, empires, peoples, dynasties, but millions of men in one-third of the then inhabited world; and more than that, he moved the altars, the gods, the religions, the ideas, the beliefs and the souls."

"On the basis of a Book, every letter which has become law, he created a spiritual nationality which blend together peoples of every tongue and race. He has left the indelible characteristic of this Muslim nationality the hatred of false gods and the passion for the One and Immaterial God. This avenging patriotism against the profanation of Heaven formed the virtue of the followers of Muhammad; the conquest of one-third the earth to the dogma was his miracle; or rather it was not the miracle of man but that of reason.

"The idea of the unity of God, proclaimed amidst the exhaustion of the fabulous theogonies, was in itself such a miracle that upon it's utterance from his lips it destroyed all the ancient temples of idols and set on fire one-third of the world. His life, his meditations, his heroic revelings against the superstitions of his country, and his boldness in defying the furies of idolatry, his firmness in enduring them for fifteen years in Mecca, his acceptance of the role of public scorn and almost of being a victim of his fellow countrymen: all these and finally, his flight his incessant preaching, his wars against odds, his faith in his success and his superhuman security in misfortune, his forbearance in victory, his ambition, which was entirely devoted to one idea and in no manner striving for an empire; his endless prayers, his mystic conversations with God, his death and his triumph after death; all these attest not to an imposture but to a firm conviction which gave him the power to restore a dogma. This dogma was twofold the unity of God and the immateriality of God: the former telling what God is, the latter telling what God is not; the one overthrowing false gods with the sword, the other starting an idea with words.

    Carly Fiorina's Testimony

"The technology industry would not exist without the contributions of Arab mathematicians"

In one of her lectures, Carly Fiorina, the CEO of Hewlett-Packard, said:

    " I’ll end by telling a story.

There was once a civilization that was the greatest in the world.

It was able to create a continental super-state that stretched from ocean to ocean, and from northern climes to tropics and deserts. Within its dominion lived hundreds of millions of people, of different creeds and ethnic origins.

One of its languages became the universal language of much of the world, the
bridge between the peoples of a hundred lands. Its armies were made up of people
of many nationalities, and its military protection allowed a degree of peace and
prosperity that had never been known. The reach of this civilization’s
commerce extended from Latin America to China, and everywhere in between.

And this civilization was driven more than anything, by invention. Its
architects designed buildings that defied gravity. Its mathematicians created
the algebra and algorithms that would enable the building of computers, and the
creation of encryption. Its doctors examined the human body, and found new cures
for disease. Its astronomers looked into the heavens, named the stars, and paved
the way for space travel and exploration.

Its writers created thousands of stories. Stories of courage, romance and
magic. Its poets wrote of love, when others before them were too steeped in fear
    to think of such things.

When other nations were afraid of ideas, this civilization thrived on them,
and kept them alive. When censors threatened to wipe out knowledge from past
civilizations, this civilization kept the knowledge alive, and passed it on to
    others.

While modern Western civilization shares many of these traits, the
civilization I’m talking about was the Islamic world from the year 800
to 1600, which included the Ottoman Empire and the courts of Baghdad, Damascus
and Cairo, and enlightened rulers like Suleiman the Magnificent.

Although we are often unaware of our indebtedness to this other civilization,
its gifts are very much a part of our heritage. The technology industry would
not exist without the contributions of Arab mathematicians."

What do Muslims believe about Allah?

What do Muslims believe about Allah?

1- He is the one God, Who has no partner....

2- Nothing is like Him. He is the Creator, not created, nor a part
    of His creation.

3- He is All-Powerful, absolutely Just.

4- There is no other entity in the entire universe worthy of
    worship besides Him.

5- He is First, Last, and Everlasting; He was when nothing was,
and will be when nothing else remains.

6- He is the All-Knowing, and All-Merciful,the Supreme, the
    Sovereign.

7- It is only He Who is capable of granting life to anything.

8- He sent His Messengers (peace be upon them) to guide all of
    mankind.

9- He sent Muhammad (pbuh) as the last Prophet and Messenger for
    all mankind.

10- His book is the Holy Qur'an, the only authentic revealed book
in the world that has been kept without change.

11- Allah knows what is in our hearts.

These are some of the basic guidelines Muslims
follow in their knowledge of God:

1- Eliminate any anthropomorphism (human qualities) from their
conception of Allah. His attributes are not like human attributes, despite similar labels
    or appellations.

2- Have unwavering faith in exactly what Allah and Prophet
Muhammad (pbuh) described Allah to be, no more, no less.

3- Eradicate any hope or desire of learning or knowing the
modality of His names and attributes.

Belief totally in all the names and attributes of Allah; one cannot believe in some and
    disbelieve the others.

4- One cannot accept the names of Allah without their associated
attributes, i.e. one cannot say He is Al-Hayy - 'The Living' and then say that He is
without life. Similarity in names (or meanings) does not imply similarity in what is being
described (referents). As a robotics arm differs from a human arm, so the "hand"
of Allah is nothing like a human hand, His speech is nothing like human speech, etc.

5- Certain words are ambiguous or vague in their meanings, and
thus may be susceptible to misinterpretation. Only those meanings that are in accordance
with what is specified by Allah and His Prophet (pbuh) are acceptable.

Benefits of reading quranic Surahs, How to recite Quran

Isa bin Muhammad (Alaihir Rahmah) says that I once saw Abu Bakr bin Mujahid (Alaihir Rahmah) after his death in a dream reading Holy Quran. I asked, "You have died, how are you reciting," upon which he said, "After every Salah and finishing of the Quran, I would pray "O Allah, give me the Taufiq to recite holy Quran in my grave" and that is why I am praying." (Faizan-e-Sunnat)

    Ahadith

    The Holy Prophet said:
    1) The best of you is he who learn Holy Quran and taught it to others. (Bukhari)
    2) Undoubtedly, the heart gets rusted like metal gets rusted when water goes over it. The People asked, "How can they [hearts] be cleaned." The Prophet replied, "To remember death in abundance and to recite the Holy Quran." (Mishkat)
    3) That chest which does not have any Quran in it is like an abandoned house. (Tirmizi, Darmi)
    4) Whoever read Quran and memorized it and belived its' Halal to be Halal and its Haram to be Haram [i.e., accepted it commandments of Halal and Haraam], Allah will accept the intercession for such 10 people on from him whom Hell had already become Wajib. (Tirmizi, Ibn-e-Majah)
    5) Whoever is an expert in reciting Holy Quran is with the Kiraman Katebeen and whoever reads the Quran with pauses and it is difficult for him, that is, his tounge does not move easily and he recites with difficutly for him there are two rewards. (Bahar-e-Shariat)
    6) The one who has memorized Quran will be told to read and climb and recite with Tarteel (clear and distinct recitation) like you used to read with Tarteel in the Dunya; your place will be where you read your last Ayat. (Bahar-e-Shariat)
    7) Allah says, "Whoever was kept busy with the recitation of Quran from my Zikr and asking me, I will give him better than those who I give to those who ask" and the excellence of the Word of Allah over all the other words is like the excellence of Allah over all his creation.
    8) Learn Quran and read it because whoever learned the Quran and read it and did Qayam with it is like a bag filled with Musk whose fragrance is spread everywhere and whoever learned the Quran and slept that is he did not do Qiyamul Layl is like a bag which is filled with Musk and its mouth has been closed. (Tirmizi, Ibn-e-Majah, Nisaee)
    9) Read the Quran when you heart feels affection and attachment and when your heart becomes bored stand up that is stop reciting Quran. (Saheeh Bukhari and Muslim)
    10) Decorate the Quran with your (good) voices. (Mishkat)
    11) O People of the Quran, do not make the Quran a pillow, that is do not be lazy and be careless, and read the Quran in the day and night like it is the Haq of Recitation, and spread it, that is, read with good voices or do not take compensation for it, and whatever is in it, reflect upon itso that you may attain success, and do not hurry in its reward because the reward for it is great (which will be given in the Akhirah). (Bahiqi)

Rewards for certain Surahs and Ayahs

    The Holy Prophet said:
    1) Surah Fatiha is a cure from every illness. (Darmi, Bahiqi)
    2) Do not make your home a graveyard, the Shaitan runs from the home in which Surah Baqrah is recited. (Sahih Muslim)
    3) Whoever memorized the first ten ayahs of Surah Kahf will be saved the Dajjal. (Sahih Muslim)
    4) Whoever recites Surah Kahf on the day of Jummah, there will be a Nur brightened for him between two Jummahs.
    5) Everything has a heart and the heart of the Quran is Surah Yaseen, whoever read Yaseen, Allah will write the reward of reading the Quran ten times from him. (Tirmizi and Darmi)
    6) Whoever reads Surah Yaseen for the pleasure of Allah, his past sins will be forgiven so read this near your deceased. (Bahiqi)
    7) (Reading) Qul hu WAllahu Ahad (Surah Ikhlas) is equal to [reading] one third of the Quran.
    8) Whoever read Ayatul Kursi after every Fard Salah, he will be under the protection and security of Allah. (Dailmi on the Authority of Sayeduna Ali)
    9) (On the Day of Judgement) a caller will say O Recitor of Surah Inaam, come to Jannat for loving Surah Inaam and its recitation.
    10) Surah Tabarak (Surah Mulk) saves one from Hell.
    11) Whatever task is not begun with Bismillahir Rahamnir Raheem remains incomplete and unfinished.

    Ettiquteets and Rules of Tilawat:
    1) To memorize one Ayah of the Quran is Fard-e-Aeen on every Mukallaf Muslim; to memorize the entire Holy Quran is Fard-e-Kafyah; to memorize Surah Fatiha and a small Surah or something similar like three small Ayahs or one long Ayah is Wajib-e-Aeen. (Durre Mukhtar)
    2) To read the Holy Quran while looking at it is better then reading without looking at it because in this case one touches the Holy Quran, sees the Holy Quran, and reads the Holy Quran and all this is Ibadat. (Bahar-e-Shariat)
    3) To read the Holy Quran in the restroom and such places of impurity is not allowed (Na-Jaiz)
    4) It is Haraam that everybody read the Holy Quran in a gathering loudly at once, however, it is necessary to read loudly enough so that one can hear what he/she is reading, that is, if there is no other distraction like noise. (Bhare-e-Shariat) Also, many children read together at once in a Madrsa loudly for learning purposes and this is okay.
    5) It is better to read the Quran loudly that is if somebody praying, sleeping, or somebody ill will not be distracted. (Gunyah)
    6) If somebody is reciting the Quran incorrectly then it is Wajib to tell him/her unless if one fears jealousy and hate. (Gunyah)
    7) To memorize Holy Quran and then to forget it is a sin.
    8) It is from the ettiqutes of respecting the Holy Quran that one does not put their back towards the Quran or spread their legs towards the Quran or sit in a high place when the Quran is beneath. (Bahare Shariat)
    9) During recitation reflect on what you are reading. For example, when reading about punishment, one should repent; when reading about paradise, one should rejoice and pray for Jannah.
    10) The way to do Sajdah of Tilwat is as follows: If one hears or reads the Ayat of Sajdah then he should stand with the intention of performing the Sajdah of Tilawat and saying Allahu Akbar should go into Sajdah and should recite the Tasbeeh of Sajdah atleast three times. Then, saying Allahu Akbar, one should stand up. To say Allahu Akbar both times is Sunnah. Similarly, to stand before and after the Sajdah is Mustahab. (Durre Mukhtar)

Lastly, learn how to read the Quran in the company of a Qualified Sunni Alim [and mature sisters must go to a Qualified Sister] who can teach them how to read as this is necessary. At times, while reciting many brothers and sisters unknowingly make mistakes in recitation which change the meaning which breaks their Salah. Likewise, send your children to Madrsas where they may learn how to recite the Quran with correct pronunciation and Qirat. If there is not a Madrsa in your town, then establish one. Knowledge of Islam leads one to Love Allah and helps to build a good moral character within the Muslim community. By learning arabic Quran, a Muslim saves his Salah, his Iman, and his Akhirah. Learning the Quran is not limited to just learning how to recite the Holy Book, rather, it is a life long process of learning how to recite it and understand what the Quran says. The noble Ulama have worked hard and written volumes of Tafseer which consists of Ahadith, Stories, and important points. After learning the Quran, we must practice it and spread the word into our family and community.

Reading Quran to seek the light to the right path

Reading Quran to seek the light to the right path. The holy Quran is the ultimate source and light for all Muslims. To seek this light of it one needs to read Quran. The importance of the text of Quran cannot be doubted or questions. At the same time, the significance of learning Quran with translation holds a great strength for a holy quran reciter.

There are number of issue in the daily life of Muslims, in which Muslims need to improve according to the Quran. Muslims have been practicing the same conventions from long time, without consulting Quran themselves. Unfortunately, many times Muslims ignore the negative side and only see the positive side of what has been written in the holy Quran.

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman said, “People used to ask the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) about good things, but I used to ask him about bad things because I was afraid that they might overtake me.” This is a great example to follow. Few common mistakes have been jot down below to let people know so that they can protect themselves and their dear ones from making these mistakes over the time. These mistakes are based upon few myths in the religion.

Myth 1: dua will be accepted if made the first glance of Ka’aba:

Many people have the wrong perception in their minds that their dua is more likely to be answered, if it is made at the first glance of the Kab’ah. Well there is no such evidence from the Sareeah, nor does any hadith indicate any such thing. Shaykh Sa’d al-Humayd said:

“This is not true; there has to be evidence for this to be true, because acts of worship should only be based on evidence. And that evidence must be saheeh in and of itself and it should be clear and unambiguous. And Allaah knows best.”

Myth 2: Kissing the black stone from far away and in the mid of tawaaf, holds a great importance!

Kissing the black stone is sunnah, indeed a beautiful one, yet kissing it from far off does not hold nay importance. People do it because they do not get a chance to go near the stone due to huge crowd. Those who have the chance of going near the stone, are lucky but those who couldn’t make it to the stone, should not mess up the crowd by standing in the mid of Tawaaf, while disrobing the flow of the crowd and throwing fling kisses at the stone. “It should be noted that the tawaaf remains perfectly valid without kissing the Black Stone. If one does not or cannot kiss the Black Stone. It is sufficient simply to point to it, saying “Allahu Akbar” when one comes parallel to it, although one may be at a distance from it.” [Fataawa ibn Baaz]

Myth 3:  Shouting prayers is a good way

It is noticed that some people shout duas and prayers at the top of their voices during Tafaas and Sa’ee. Usually in this case the imam or the leader of the group says out a prayer, which the followers repeat in loud voice, this cause a lot of confusion amongst others. Its better that you recite your prayers, dues and holy Quran education, while keeping your voices low. Take small dua books with you if you cannot memorize these duas, so that you do not have to follow any one. Always remember that when you are praying, it is between you and your lord. “Each one of you is conversing with his Lord, so do not disturb one another or raise your voices over one another when reading [or he said] when praying”. The Passion Of Muslims Towards Quran Teaching

Quran learning and Quran Teaching are the noblest of the deeds in an Islamic way of life, because the Holy Quran serves to be the nucleus around which the lives of true Muslims shall revolve all through  their very end. Quran should act as center of gravitational pull for all true Muslims of the world, with everyone trying to get as close as possible to the centre itself because God Himself declares Quran and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as His favors to all the humanity to taste life till The Judgment Day. Consider and learn Holy Quran the following verses from the :

Aal-e-Imran [3:164] Indeed Allâh conferred a great favour on the believers when He sent among them a Messenger (Muhammad PBUH) from among themselves, reciting unto them His Verses (the Qur’ân), and purifying them (from sins by their following him), and instructing them (in) the book (the Qur’ân) and Al¬Hikmah [the wisdom and the Sunnah of the Prophet PBUH (i.e. his legal ways, statements, acts of worship)], while before that they had been in manifest error.

That is why the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also said:

“The best among you is the one who learn Quran and taught it to others”.

This is how significant Quran and Quran Teaching is to God Almighty and His beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and this is what makes Muslims all over the world so passionate about Quran Teaching.

The best thing about it is that not only Muslims all over the world inclined greatly towards Quran learning and Quran Teaching, but they make sure to arrange for the best possible Quran Teaching of their next generations, so that they can show their gratitude towards The One who is the real master of whole of the universe.

    Reciting quran without Wudu

    Reciting quran without Wudu

    Question:

At work its easier for me to read the Quran on the internet as I am on the computer for 8 hrs.  I was wondering if it is permissible to read the Quran on the internet without wudu'?  I asked a local Shaykh and he implied that the obligation of having wudu' is only when one is touching the Quran but not merely reading it without touching it.

    Walaikum assalam,

In general, it is permitted to recite the Qur'an without touching it when one is not in a state of minor ritual impurity.

It is superior, when reasonably possible, for one to do wudu.

In a state of major ritual impurity, it is not permitted to recite the Qur'an. [Ala' al-Din Abidin, Gifts of Guidance]

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Knowledge is only through study." While some knowledge can be gained from reading quran online or casually listening to lectures, and listen quran through the best means to gain knowledge is through finding a qualified teacher and then setting up a systematic program to read quran online. Do You Know Holy Quran

    Do You Know Holy Quran

Taken from: Invitation to Islam, Issue 2, July 1997 with slight modifications

Of all the acclaimed masterpieces that the world has seen, nothing can be compared to the book known as the holy Quran. Millions have become Muslims upon simply hearing a verse from this amazing book, yet still the majority knows nothing of it. The Qur'an is the Final Revelation from the Creator to humanity. It was revealed in the year 610 CE to the Prophet Muhammed (saws), and completed over a period of 23 years. These 23 years of revelation resulted in a book which comprised of 114 chapters and over 6000 verses. All of this was to become the primary source of law for the whole of mankind to live and die by.

The impact of this book is such that Allah says :

"Had We[1] revealed this Qur'an upon a mountain, surely you would have seen it humble itself and crumble out of the fear of Allah. Such are the parables We put forward to mankind so that they may reflect"
    (Surah Al-Hashr 59:21)

However, it seems as if the hearts of the people have become harder then the mountains which tower above us. When the Qur'an is recited or even mentioned, people turn away with disgust. In the West, this is primarily due to the negative exposure from the media. It has resulted in many non-Muslims not even wanting to hear the name of this amazing book. Muslims too, have become hardhearted because of the cultural influences of the West. Many young Muslims perceive the Qur'an to be nothing more then an old wrapped up book, which comes off the highest shelf once a year during Ramadan!

If people were to truly reflect upon this book, they would realise that nothing in this world is quite the same. So why should this claim be accepted over others? Why should the Qur'an be given precedence over the likes of the Bible, the Gita[2] or the Granth Sahib[3] ? The following reasons will inshallah give an indication as to why this book deserves the attention of all humanity.

    Preservation

"There is probably in the world no other book which has remained twelve centuries with so pure a text". Writing 200 years ago, these are the words of the famous English critic of Islam, Sir William Muir. But as Muslims we do not need Williarn Muir to tell us this. 1400 years ago, the Muslims accepted this reality when Allah revealed to them:

"Indeed it is We who have sent down the reminder (the Qur'an), and indeed it is Us who shall preserve it"
    (Surah Al-Hijr 15:9)

These words have proved true to this very day. From the moment the first words were revealed to Muhammed (saws), to this very day, every single letter and word of the Qur'an has remained unchanged.

Before Islam, all the revelations sent were not given this divine assurance. This is why we find that books like the Bible are riddled with corruption and inaccuracies. It is well known that man has tampered with the Bible to the extent that annually different versions are produced to suit trends and desires[4]. In fact this has been going on for so long that it is almost impossible to see what of the words of the Creator are left, if any!

With the holy Quran online it is the exact opposite. The contents of this amazing book are stored in the hearts of millions of Muslims worldwide. Children as young as 12 have memorised the entire book in its original language, Arabic. There is no other religious scripture on earth which is orally preserved in its original language by so many and over such a period of time, without having been tampered somewhere along the line. The Bible is a prime example of this. Many Christians believe that English is the divine language of the Bible. However Jesus (as) spoke Aramaic. From Aramaic, his life-story was translated into Hebrew. From Hebrew it was translated into Greek. From Greek to Latin, and then finally from Latin to English! There has not been a single vicar, priest or layman in recorded history who has even memorised the Bible in English, let alone the Aramaic! As Muslims we believe the Qur'an can only be in the language it was revealed in, i.e. Arabic. Anything else is a translation and not the divine words of the Creator. A true test of this divine preservation would be to burn all the books and manuscripts in existence, to see which can return as it was. The Qur'an would be the only book which would return in its original form, letter for letter, word for word.

Many Christians say that the Qur'anic claim of preservation needs to be backed-up by manuscript evidence. For us this is not a necessary criteria, but in order to quell the doubts, the Muslims have ample proof. Two copies of the Qur'an are in existence which date back to the Third Caliph Uthmaan (ra), 20 years after the death of the Prophet (saws). These two copies are to be found in the Topkapi museum, Istanbul, Turkey and in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The Tashkent copy is thought to have been the personal copy of the Caliph as it still contains stains of his blood, which was shed when he was murdered whilst reading it. Any copy of the Qur'an which is compared to these copies, will show that there is not a single difference between what we have today and what was in existence 1400 years ago. Thus Allah's promise holds true.

    No Mistakes

Man as a creature is fallible. For this reason anything which is produced by him will naturally have faults. With the Qur'an, such a notion cannot even be considered as it is from the one who is Infallible. In fact Allah clarifies this matter beautifully when he says:

"Do they not consider the Qur'an? Had it been from other then Allah surely they would have found much discrepancies within it"
    (Surah An-Nisa 4:82)

Throughout history many have tried to scrutinise and search the Qur'an for mistakes and errors. To this day no one has been able to bring a shred of proof showing that this book is not from Allah. Some Christians have even called it the work of the Devil because the book affected them so much when they read it! With other scriptures, contradictions, mistakes and absurdities are constantly present. When people contrast these ambiguities with the Qur'an, it often results in the acceptance of this faultless book.

    The Arabic Language

Upon hearing Quranic recitation, you may be rather startled. Besides hearing the reciter of the prayer, you often hear people in the background sobbing and wailing heavily. So what is it that makes these people cry so much? It is nothing more then the beauty and eloquence of this book which moves millions to tears. This beauty is expressed in the language of Arabic. Allah says :

"Indeed We have revealed this as an Arabic Qur'an so that you may understand"
    (Surah Yusuf 12:2)

At the time of the Prophet (saws) three modes of expression were used. There was normal speech, the speech of the soothsayer and poetry. The Arabs were the masters of their language, and poetry was their cultural highlight. Arabic poetry is split into 16 categories, each separate from the other. When the Qur'an was proclaimed to the Arabs it amazed them beyond all limits. It was like nothing they had ever heard before. It did not fit into the 16 categories of poetry, nor was it the speech of a soothsayer, and it certainly was not normal speech. If it was not all these, then it could only be the word of Allah.

The eloquence and majesty of the early chapters of the Qur'an moved many to tears, and the beautiful Qur'anic Arabic converted millions of Arabs in the Middle-East. Not only did the Qur'an effect the lives of these Arabs, but it also transformed their culture. Even today, no serious study of the Arabic language is possible without reference to this book.

The reaction of some pagans was that they accused Muhammed (saws) of being a soothsayer and a madman. In order to silence them, Allah issued a challenge. At first he asked them to produce a book like the Qur'an. When it could not be done, Allah asked them to produce ten chapters like it. When this too could not be done Allah finally stated:

"And if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to Our slave, then produce a chapter like it"
    (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:23)

The smallest chapter in the Qur'an is only 3 verses long (Chapter 108). The pagans at the time of the Prophet (saws) could not even produce something as small as this, and since then no one else has completed this impossible task. All of this is in light of the fact that the Prophet Muhammed (saws) could not read or write, thus refuting those who say that the Qur'an was his own handiwork.

The Qur'an is the Final book of revelation. After it there will be no more. However, many have tried to deny this by producing their own new versions of the Qur'an. Among them have been the two false prophets, Musailama[5] and Ghulam Ahmed[6]. Many Chapters in the Qur'an are named after animals, such as the Ant, Spider etc. Musailama tried to copy this, and went about creating a chapter in his book called the Weasel! In Arabic it is called Al-Wabl and it hardly causes people to be struck in awe! On the other hand Ghulam Ahmed, the 'British stooge', claimed to receive revelation in cockney English!! Such foolishness could never compare to the beauty of the Qur'an with its clear and beautiful Arabic language.

    Science

Over the past few decades much interest has been shown in the scientific content of the Qur'an. Scientific data which has been discovered in recent times, has been existent in this book for 1400 years. In fact the very common origin of this universe is stated clearly by Allah, the Most High:

"Do not the disbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, then We parted them. And We made from water every living thing. Will they then not believe?"
    (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30)

This parting of the heavens and the earth is more commonly known to scientists as the 'big bang'. It is also a fact that life originated from water and that every living cell is composed of 85% water. Without water life is impossible.

The mountains of the earth, like icebergs, have roots going deep into the ground. This ensures that they will not topple with their extreme heights - this is known as 'isostasy'. In this way the mountains are like the stakes which are used to anchor a tent. But this fact is already known to us when Allah says:

"Have We not made the earth an expanse and the mountains stakes?"
    (Surah An-Naba 78:6-7)

    and

"Allah has cast into the ground mountains standing firm so that it does not shake with you"
    (Surah Luqman 31:10)

The embryological data which is found in the holy Quran is astounding. Allah describes the formation of a baby inside the womb from the very moment the sperm reaches the ovum, to its formation into a human. This data, which was only discovered about 30 years ago, has amazed many westem scientists. Amongst them is Dr Keith Moore from the University of Toronto, Canada. Dr Moore[7] is a recognised authority in embryological circles, with his university text book being set as a standard text in many universities throughout the world. When Dr Moore was asked as to how this information in the Qur'an could be explained, he replied: "It could only have been divinely revealed".

    History

The Qur'an is a book of historical accuracy. One accuracy which has corrected the mistakes of many Christians and historians, is the fate of the pharaoh who drowned in the Red Sea whilst pursuing Moses. The Biblical story would have us believe that the matter ended when the pharaoh drowned. But the Qur'an explains further. When he was drowning the pharaoh confessed his faith in Allah. But it was too late, and Allah promised him:

"This day We shall preserve you in your body, so that you may be a sign for those who come after you. But indeed many of mankind are heedless of Our signs"
    (Surah Yunus 10:92)

In 1898 the tombs of various pharaohs were discovered in the Valley of the Kings, in Egypt. In 1975 Dr Maurice Bucaille, an eminent French surgeon was allowed to examine the mummified bodies of Rameses II and the pharaoh who had pursued Moses - Merneptah. Dr Bucaille discovered that Merneptah had received very violent blows to several parts of his body and had suffered a massive heart attack. Amazingly, these are the results which occur when someone dies from drowning! Thus Allah had saved the body of the transgressing pharaoh as a sign for all humanity.

For those who say that Muhammed (saws) knew his history and wrote it in the holy Quran, the following shall prove otherwise. In the year 615 CE the Roman army was defeated by the Persians. About this event Allah revealed:

"The Romans have been defeated in the lowest land, but in a few years they shall be victorious again, within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after, is only with Allah"
    (Surah Ar-Rum 30:2-4)

The words of Allah proved true as the Persians were defeated at the battle of Issus, 7 years later in 622 CE. There is no possible way that Muhammed (saws) could have known (if he wrote the Qur'an) that the Romans would be victorious. In fact he also did not know that the 'lowest land' at which the battle was fought was literally that. The battle in 615 CE was fought on the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point below sea level on earth, at 1300 ft.

A book with these credentials could only be from the Creator of the heavens and the earth. A book which we need to acquaint ourselves with. A book . . .

". . . which has been revealed to you (O' Muhammed) so that you may lead mankind out of the darkness and into the light"
    (Surah lbrahim 14:1)

    Footnotes

1 The word 'WE' does not mean that there is more then one God. Rather it is a plural of respect which gives Allah grandeur over his creation.
2 The Baghyad Gita is one of the Hindu scriptures.
3 The Guru Granth Sahib is the Sikh scripture
4 The most recent version of the Bible is the 'Politically Correct Version'!!
5 Musailama claimed prophethood just before the death of the Prophet Muhammed (saws). He was from the region of Yamaamah in Arabia and from the tribe of Haneefah.
6 Besides Dr Moore, there have been many other famous Western scientists who have accepted Islam. One of the most prominent was the famous French oceanographer, Jacques Yves Cousteau who has recently passed away. Cousteau was amazed at the accuracy of the Qur'anic statements regarding underwater activity and thus embraced Islam. As a result of his death, Cousteau's life achievements have been highlighted in the Western media. However his acceptance of Islam was conveniently absent from the news-reports.

Reading the Quran Right on Gender

    08 Mar

So I’ve been making it a point to attend the extra lectures and talks with guest speakers that are always going on in AKU.  Today, in light of it being International Women’s day, the Aga Khan Working Group for Women invited guest speaker Mr Abbas Husain to give a discussion on the Quran and how to interpret it correctly in terms of gender.  It was a thought provoking talk to say the least, and I wanted tto go over some of the points he mentioned here in my post.

So he started off with the idea that reading, especially of a book such as the Quran, has to be done with four dimensions in mind – reading the text, reading between the lines, reading the writing on the wall, and reading for interpretation.  He went on to mention that the Quran itself mentions itself in many terms, but some of the most important to remember were that it is Kitab, that is, a book.  Furqan, as in, the criterion, and Hakeem, that is, it is Wise.

The translation of Surah Nisa and its highly controversial verse, however, is what he mostly focused on and what I really wanted to go through here.

Men are qawwamun of women, because Allah has given the one more faddala than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are qanitat, and guard in (the husband’s) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their, beds (and last) wadariboohunna; but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance): for Allah is Most High, Great (above you all).

    An-Nisa 4:34

I am probably butchering the arabic in the process, but what I really wanted to do was what he did, that is, highlight the words that have caused the most contention in this verse that, to use Mr. Abbas’ words “has caused so much heartbreak over the centuries, and some say would have been better left out altogether.”

So to go through the conventional translation and the meanings recently derived.

As far as Qawwamun is concerned, the translation normally given is that of protector, maintainer.  Which is the correct translation and can be counted as so.  But the idea here is that the word can also be taken to mean supporter, and here it refers only to financial support, and not in terms of being supported in everything i.e. stronger.  If you take the translation as ‘supporter’ it can also put an entirely different spin on the thing – the idea being that that which supports isn’t superior in any way to the that which is supported.  Also, he went on to say that the verse speaks of Men and Women, not Husband and wife, as commentators sometimes take it to mean, and that in societal terms what this would mean would be that all men are protectors of all women – and in such a society that is envisioned by the quran, no woman need fear any man, for all would be safe.  It is an empowering of women rather than a caging or degrading of them.

Then the word Faddala (bounty, favours) came into question.  According to several translations this whole part has come to be translated as “because Allah has given men more bounty than the women.” This, in the light of the arabic, according to Mr Abbas, is a gross misinterpretation, as the verse speaks of ‘one’, and that can be referring to men or women, and thus the real meaning is that “we have bestowed some of you (male and female) with more blessings and some with less”. It is Not to be taken as an admission on the part of Allah that he prefers men to women and has blessed them more.

Then also he spoke of Qanitat (obedient), which is taken to mean obedient and in some translations has given rise to the idea that women have to be as obedient to their ‘protectors’ (see the chavinism building up there?) as they are to their God.  But in the places in the Quran that the word qanitat and derivatives have been used, it is always in the sense of devoutly obedient, or obedient to God.  So that the misconception that has down the line given rise to such nauseous ideas as husbands being ‘majazi khuda’ should really have been that “Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to God)” and not devoutly obedient to their overprotecting men.

Finally, he dealt with darraba, wa-adhriboohunna, or the term taken as the permission to beat women lightly in cases of disobedience.  Since this was done very briefly in the question answer session and not part of the main lecture, he basically said that if you look at the Sunnah, and consider that the prophet never laid a finger on his wives or children, this translation of ‘beating lightly’ while may be correct, is seemingly highly contradicted by the actions of the holy prophet.  That being said, translators and commentators recently have come to consider another meaning of the word, and that it should be taken as ‘interrupt’ or cease relationship with, and not as the translation of beating as is commonly thought.

In other words, the verse got blown to heaven :P

There were many other topics mentioned, and several issues lightly touched upon.  For instance the idea that since believers consider the Quran as God’s book and consider God as just, when they come across a verse that is grossly, obviously unjust, they must either abandon the idea that the Quran is God’s book or they must cease to think God is Just.  Since neither of those are possible for a believer, they must always consider the only remaining option – that the meaning they have derived is in error.

He also touched upon how literalism is destroying thought these days (he called it ‘intellectual arthritis’, which everyone loved, of course) and how the quran can be taken to have multiple meanings, but it is up to us to pick the best meaning. Also of how metaphorical the quran’s text can often be, and how it should not be taken literally all the time, even when it seems to be saying something very plain and simple.

The question-answer session at the end was done very well, and some of the issues such as inheritance and witness cases, and the re-evaluation of concepts such as mehram and all, were talked about. I asked the last question of the day (after promising to blog about the lecture :D – i fulfulled my promise yay!) which was – considering 1400 years of unequal thinking, how long do you think it’s going to take for all the viewpoints to change to one of more equality?

Mr. Abbas was optimistic.  He said that since recent times, many revolutions in thought and ideas took place in barely a lifetime.  That it was more than possible that this would come about, and soon.  And that concluded the session :)

    -

SO yeah.  Apologies for the long post, but I thought the issue deserved it :D   See you guys soon.

    -

P.S. for those of you scratching your head at my professed irreligiousness and yet lengthy discourse on this topic, I would like to say that this isn’t a representation of my views but a slightly hodgepodged and highly abbrievated review of a lecture that I happened to attend and find interesting.  So yeah, go find other things to worry about.

The pronunciation of Holy Quran is a sensitive matter. There are many words in the Quran, if we pronounce them incorrectly; the whole meaning of the verse would be changed.  Therefore it is really important to have a Quran tutor to improve your pronunciation of the Holy Quran.

Allah (SWT) loves the people who is  teaching Quran there is a Hadith that emphasizes on Quran teaching and says that the people who teach Quran are the best of the people. Here is the complete Hadith: “Hadhrat Usman (Radhiy Allaho Anho) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) said:  “The best amongst you is he who learns the Qur’an and teaches it”.

The Holy Quran is the great way of remembering Allah (SWT); Hazrat Imam Ahmed Bin Hunbal (R.A) was told by Allah (SWT) that the biggest way of closeness to Allah (SWT) is Quran Recitation.

Hadhrat Abu  Sa’eed (Radhiy Allaho Anho) narrates  that Rasulullah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) said:  “Almighty Allah says; “If  anybody finds no time for My  remembrance  and  for begging  favors  of  Me,  because  of  his remaining busy with the Holy Qur’an, I shall give him more than what I give to all those who beg favors of Me”. The superiority of the Word of Allah over all other words is like the superiority of Allah over the entire creation

Reflecting on Surah Nur:58-64 | Quran Reflections

As an adult do I respect other people‘s privacy?

I used to go through my families stuff. I would do this not because I wanted to know what they’re up to but because I would be bored. I’ve stopped doing this as I realize it is wrong.
Being an elder sibling, I do respect my siblings privacy. Sometimes being older I felt like I would have to check to see what my siblings are up to. When it came to that I would check my siblings stuff : like for instance a cell phone which would be in front of me or a diary.
I think I mostly do this with my parents : like we think because they are our parents its ok to read their messages. I realize that it’s wrong. Just as we would want others to respect our privacy we have to learn to respect their privacy. InshaAllah I plan on not  going through anyones stuff, cell phone etc. in the future.
